The Baker's Wife 1938 French Moyenne (23.6" X 31.5")
This is a French Moyenne poster (23.6" X 31.5") for 1938 French classic film, La Femme du Boulanger (The Baker's Wife).
Directed and written by Marcel Pagnol, the film is a comedic drama based on an episode from Jean Giono's 1932 novel Blue Boy. It stars the legendary French actor Raimu in one of his most celebrated roles as the baker, Aimable Castanier.
Plot: Shortly after arriving in a small Provençal village, the new baker's young wife, Aurélie (played by Ginette Leclerc), runs away with a handsome shepherd. Stricken by grief, the baker stops baking, leaving the village without bread. To restore their daily supply, the feuding villagers must set aside their differences and work together to find the wife and bring her home.
Orson Welles famously praised the film as "perfect" and hailed Raimu as "the greatest actor who ever lived". In 1976, it was adapted into an American musical of the same name with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz.
