Requiem for a Heavyweight 1962

This is a six-sheet (81" x81") poster for the 1962 sports drama Requiem for a Heavyweight, a film widely regarded as one of the greatest boxing movies ever made.

Directed by Ralph Nelson and written by Rod Serling (The Twilight Zone), the film was adapted from Serling's own Emmy-winning 1956 teleplay. It offers a gritty, realistic look at the exploitative underbelly of professional boxing.

The story follows Louis "Mountain" Rivera, an aging, punch-drunk heavyweight whose career ends after a brutal seventh-round knockout by a young Cassius Clay (who appears as himself). After 17 years and 111 fights, a doctor warns that another blow to the head could result in permanent blindness.

While a sympathetic employment counselor (Julie Harris) tries to help Mountain find a life outside the ring, his corrupt manager, Maish Rennick (Jackie Gleason), is desperate to pay off heavy gambling debts to the mob. To settle his debt, Maish manipulates and coerces Mountain into a humiliating new career as a professional wrestler, stripping away the fighter's last bit of integrity.

The film is noted for its opening tracking shot featuring real boxers and appearances by champions like Jack Dempsey and Muhammad Ali (billed as Cassius Clay).
