The Tale of Oiwa’s Ghost 1961 Japanese B2 Poster

This is a Japanese B2 Poster (20.3" x 28.7") for the Classic 1961 Japanese horror film, The Tale of Oiwa’s Ghost (aka The Ghost Story of Oiwa's Spirit).

Directed by Tai Kato, The Tale of Oiwa’s Ghost (originally titled Kaidan Oiwa no Borei) is a 1961 Japanese horror film that offers a gritty, black-and-white adaptation of the classic Yotsuya Kaidan folk story. It is noted for blending the director's background in crime cinema with supernatural horror to create a "lavish chiller" focused on betrayal and vengeance.

Released on July 2, 1961, by the Toei Company, the film runs for approximately 94 minutes. Unlike other more theatrical adaptations of the same story, Tai Katô’s version is often described by critics on Genre Grinder as resembling a "neorealist" social drama that slowly shifts into supernatural horror.

The film follows the moral decay of Iemon Tamiya, a penniless and murderous samurai played by Tomisaburo Wakayama. Seeking to improve his social standing, Iemon schemes to abandon his loyal wife, Oiwa, to marry the daughter of a wealthy family. Iemon poisons Oiwa, leading to a "gut-wrenching" physical transformation depicted in a single, unedited take. After her death, Oiwa returns as a disfigured onryō (vengeful ghost) to haunt Iemon and those who conspired against her, particularly during his new wedding night.
