Carter the Great 1926 8 Sheet Billboard
This is an iconic 1926 8 sheet billboard poster (80" x 106") advertising a magic show by "Carter the Great" (Charles Joseph Carter, 1874–1936), one of the prominent magicians from the Golden Age of Magic.
Charles Carter was an American stage magician who, unlike many contemporaries who stayed in the U.S., toured the world with over 30 tons of equipment. He was known for elaborate illusions like "The Lion’s Bride" and "Cheating the Gallows".
This specific poster, titled "Do the Dead Materialize?", promotes his "Spirit Cabinet" illusion. It features vibrant imagery of ghouls, devils, and skeletons, which was a hallmark of his dramatic marketing style.
The original posters were printed by the Otis Lithograph Co. of Cleveland, Ohio, using high-quality stone lithography. Large versions often consisted of four or eight separate sheets joined together.
