Xyreen H.A. Rey Poster Circa 1935

This is a rare Circa 1935 poster (37"x 48") advertising Cyrene after shave lotion by H.A. Rey. H. A. Rey (born Hans Augusto Reyersbach; September 16, 1898 – August 26, 1977) was a German-born American illustrator and author, known best for the series of children's picture books that he and his wife Margret Rey created about Curious George.

This poster was printed in Switzerland as the printer noted on the poster is Wassermann AG, based in Basel. The website link and the end states it was printed circa 1935 while the Reys had their advertising studios in Brazil. However I also discovered a French version stating it was printed circa 1950s.

Hans Augusto Reyersbach was born in Hamburg, German Empire on September 16, 1898. He and his wife, Margret, were both German Jews. They first met in Hamburg at Margret's sister's 16th birthday party. They met again in Brazil, where Rey was working as a salesman of bathtubs and Margret had gone to escape the rise of Nazism in Germany. Dismayed to find Hans was wasting his artistic talent, she convinced him to leave the import-export business and together they founded Rio de Janeiro's first advertising agency. They got married in 1935 and moved to Paris, France in August of that year.[3] They lived in Montmartre and fled Paris in June 1940 on bicycles, carrying the Curious George manuscript with them. They received visas in Bayonne under instructions from the Portuguese consul in Bordeaux, Aristides de Sousa Mendes, which enabled them to leave Europe via Portugal.

Stone Litho, Linen backed.
